This is a very well-toned instrument that would appeal to any discerning cellist and which would open a door to progress and expression. The tone is strong with projection and it speaks with great ease.
One is struck by the beautiful choice of materials. The two-piece back is of mildly flamed maple with a straight, medium curl, repeated in the ribs, neck and scroll. The top is of high-grade tone spruce with narrow grain at the centre line, widening slightly to the flanks.
Workmanship throughout is of the highest standard with flawless attention to detail, notable in tracing of the purfling, the outstanding cornerwork and mitres, and also in the scroll which is balanced and elegant.
The brown oil-based varnish is very translucent and compliments the wood well. A slight degree of antiquing is evident, tastefully done and adding to the character and visual appeal.
At this time this cello is fitted with a Belgian bridge by Aubert, a light-weight professional quality tailpiece, and a firm steel endpin, ensuring stability during performance.
This is potentially a career instrument for a discerning cellist seeking a responsive voice for expression.
