This is a truly beautiful instrument made of exceptionally appealing materials and superbly antiqued. Furthermore, its tonal properties set it aside as essentially a solo instrument - the tone is strong, clear, focussed and rich with very easy response, making it a real pleasure to play, and which makes even difficult passages a lot easier. Tonally I consider it as suitable for recital and concerto performance.
One is struck by the unusually beautiful one piece back of exceptionally well-figured maple with a distinct deep flame with a straight medium curl. This lovely wood is also featured in the ribs. The top is of outstanding tone spruce with narrow grain on the centre line, widening slightly to the flanks.
The oil varnish is a beautiful blend of light amber-brown over a yellow ground. The antiquing is truly cleverly done, adding greatly to this violin's high visual appeal. The current boxwood fittings beautifully match this. Also, this instrument is unusually light in the hand - a good sign for desired tonal response, which doesn't disappoint.
This violin has the tonal properties of a concert instrument and would suit a discerning violinist seeking an instrument that allows for the easy execution of demanding passages and who seeks a responsive voice for expression.
