This violin is an outstanding example of the work of Ch. J.B. Collin-Mézin père (1841-1923) who is considered as a foremost French violin maker whose work is highly respected and sought-after by professional and concert violinists everywhere. This violin reflects not only the meticulous attention to detail and superb craftsmanship Collin-Mézin Père was known for, but it is also exceptionally well-toned - one of the reasons his instruments are so much in demand.
It bears the precise labelling associated with his work, dated 1900 by hand, and has his characteristic signature in the back, near the soundpost.
Ch. J. B. Collin-Mézin (the father) initially studied with his own father and later worked for Claude Francois Vuillaume in Brussels. He then started his own studio in Paris in 1867 where he remained until his death in 1923. As violinmaker he won numerous important prizes and awards and is considered as one of the important violinmakers of his time.
The selection of materials in this instrument is characteristic and striking - the beautifully flamed back and sides are combined with excellent tone spruce in the top, featuring a slightly medium to open grain, very even from side to side. The deep golden-red varnish is highly transparent, complimenting the woods and allowing for fine interaction between the wood and light.
This violin is exceptionally well-toned and is certainly suitable for high-level professional work and solo performance.
