It has to be said at the onset that this cello is exceptionally well-toned with easy response and focus throughout the register. It is really suitable for demanding solo performance such as concertos and recitals.
When a maker chooses to specialize in a certain instrument, such as viola or cello, it means that he has developed a deeper understanding of the tonal characteristics of that instrument and is more comfortable dealing with the norms and demands associated with those instruments. What comes to mind for example is the work of Joachim Gräbner in cellos and violas, Dawne Haddad as cello and viola maker, and notably the Hungarian, Vassil Valtchev as viola maker.
Likewise Tivadar Mohácsi (b. 1974) opted early in life to pursue the construction of cellos and double basses. He began formal studies in 2010 and since 2016 he operates his own workshop in Budapest. He is led by the models of Stradivari, Montagnana, Amati and Gagliano and today his instruments are used widely in Australia, Japan, the US, Canada, Mexico, Taiwan and all over Europe, notably in Germany and Austria. His instruments have a reputation for superb tone and as maker he is highly regarded everywhere.
This cello follows the Stradivari model. Mohácsi exclusively uses high-end tonewoods like Bosnian maple and spruce, as he did in this cello. Interestingly, this instrument's back is in one piece of superb Bosnian maple, cut on the slab. The top is of excellent spruce with a medium to narrow grain. Workmanship throughout is of a very high order with attention to detail and conforming to the highest standards of lutherie.
The oil varnish is an attractive reddish brown, applied in Mohácsi's unique and characteristic way, and which greatly enhances the visual appeal of this instrument.
This cello is offered with a very good used hard German cello case by the firm of Winter.
