Of the large Heberlein family of violin makers, it was certainly Heinrich Theodore Heberlein Jr (1843 - 1909) who is recognized as the most famous member, and also one of the best Markneukirchen makers of his time. He also taught at the Markneukirchen School of Violin Making.
This violin appears to date from around 1890 and bears this maker's known brand inside, in the centre of the back. It reads H. Th. Heberlein Jr followed by the maker's crest (see photo) which makes it indisputable as originating from his workshop.
The attractive one-piece back, ribs, neck and scroll are made from the same piece of well-flamed maple with a distinct medium curl. The top is of superb tone-spruce. Workmanship throughout is refined and conforms to a very high standard. The scroll is particularly attractive - elegant and very well balanced. The golden amber varnish is slightly shaded and compliments the materials well.
This violin would be a superb acquisition for any demanding violinist. It is unusually well toned with power, focus and projection, yet speaks with ease. It is equal to any demand that may be made on it.
