This violin is manifestly of French origin, evident in its dimensions, modelling, choice of materials and general workmanship. It is very well-toned and responsive. Although unlabelled it appears to date from the early twentieth century.
The materials in this instrument are superb. The two-piece back, ribs and scroll are of well-flamed maple with an even medium curl - really attractive. The top reflects a French predilection for medium to open grain tone spruce, in this case very straight and even, widening to the flanks. The light brown oil-based varnish is very transparent, allowing for good interaction between wood and light.
Workmanship throughout is steady and secure showing an experienced hand in the purfling and mitres. The blackened chamfers in the scroll and bouts also underscore this violin's French origins.
This is a good violin by all standards. It would be suitable for performance of demanding repertoire, including solo work.
