This unlabelled violin is manifestly an old instrument and a calculated guess would date it to around 1770. Its modelling suggests English origins but some might feel it is German.
The one-piece back appears to be of Birchwood, cut on the slab. It is somewhat plain, but the ribs and neck evidently are of maple and more figured. The top is of very finely grained tone spruce. The Fs are elegant and tidy but somewhat idiosyncratic and maybe typical of a certain maker. Interestingly the scroll is also of Birchwood, matching the back, but surprisingly none of the pegholes are bushed, contributing to the somewhat enigmatic character of this lovely old violin.
This violin is responsive with a mature strong tone and would suit a discerning musician who is drawn to antiquity and the performance of baroque and classical repertoire.
