The Italian violin maker, Rolando Rinfreschi (1932-2011) assessed this unlabelled violin in 2008, considering it as being of German origin. However, this is not conclusive and open to debate as the violin could also be of East European origin. Whatever the case, it can be said with certainty that it is well-made, of very good materials, showing an experienced hand in the workmanship and is responsive and well-toned. A calculated guess would date it to around 1900.
One is struck by the beautiful one-piece back of nicely flamed maple with a medium curl. The same wood is also used for the ribs, and the neck and scroll. The top is of excellent tone spruce with medium to narrow grain. The Fs are elegant and refined with mild fluting of the lower palettes. The purfling and mitres are superb and the scroll is elegant and well-balanced. The red oil base varnish is intact and fully the original, but has some wear in the usual places, as well as some superficial marks in the top. By and large the violin remains attractive with lots of character.
This is a good violin by all standards.

This violin is in very good condition with only minor cracks in the top, all of them superbly repaired It would appear that the neck had been reset at some point as the violin has a holding pin in the neck button, through into the neckroot.
