This violin is very well-toned and responsive with focus and projection and is in superb condition.

The modelling and workmanship in this instrument is refined and steady and consistent with German work from a good trade studio. It is labelled with a generic Carlo Bergonzi label, but has manifestly nothing to do with that maker. At a guess it was made around 1910.

The choice of materials is impressive. The back is truly beautiful - of nicely flamed maple with a distinct medium curl, also used for the sides, neck and scroll. This reflects good lutherie. The top is of excellent tone spruce with medium to wide grain. Workmanship is steady throughout, showing attention to detail in the purfling and corners. The reddish brown varnish is attractive to the eye and compliments the wood nicely.

This violin should suit a serious player well and would also open a wide door of progress to an advanced student seeking to grow to professional level.

It's a pleasant instrument to play on from every point of view.
