This violin is manifestly a French instrument, probably from a Mirecourt trade studio and a calculated guess would date it to around 1890. It bears a generic Stradivari label and has been considerably antiqued to appear older than it is.
The two-piece back and ribs are of nicely figured maple with a distinct medium curl. The neck and scroll has a narrower flame. The top is of excellent tone spruce with very straight medium grain. The varnish is a brownish wine red, very characteristic of some French traditions, and is somewhat opaque. The varnish shows slight craquelure.
This violin is well-toned and responsive.
