This violin is fitted with a fake 'Gobetti' label, but has manifestly nothing to do with that maker. The label, dated 1700, was printed with half-tone printing, which was invented only in 1895 (see photos).
It has potential to be an excellent instrument after some work and restoration. The varnish still appears to be the original. However, the following needs attention (see photos):
The old repairs to cracks in the top in the soundpost area should be redone better and properly cleated and a soundpost patch fitted.
The top edge by the treble F needs to be restored.
The centre seam in the back has been worked on, but this can be greatly improved by a good craftsman.
The upper treble rib was poorly repaired following serious damage. This could be better done.
I believe this violin has the potential to sound good and could serve for many decades to come, after some good structural repairs.
