Jacobus Van Soelen was an important presence and influence in the South African music world. Van Soelen (1952-2020) was a highly respected violin maker and restorer based in Cape Town and until his death he took care of many repairs, restorations and setups, not only in that region, but also throughout the country. As violin maker his instruments are appreciated by many professionals within South Africa and further abroad.

This violin bears testimony to Van Soelen's discernment and skill, and also to his grasp of the acoustic fundamentals of good violin making, resulting in a very well toned and responsive instrument.

The two-piece back, ribs, neck and scroll are of a mildly flamed maple with a narrow curl. The top is of superb tone spruce with a medium to narrow curl. Purfling and corner work is accurate and shows a skilled hand. The scroll is balanced and refined. The light golden brown oil varnish compliments the materials well, adding to the appeal of an attractive and very good instrument.

Interestingly this violin was used for the production of 'FIDELIO' on Robben Island' in March 2004, presented by the Norwegian National Opera and the Cape Town Opera. The Norwegian Concert Master, Ole Bohn chose to play on this violin for the performance rather than on his own 18th century Italian instrument, because the rehearsals and performance were outdoors. He said afterwards, 'this violin plays like a dream!'.

This violin is truly well-toned and responsive, speaking with ease. It should satisfy the demands of any discerning violinist and is suitable for all levels of performance, from chamber music through to recitals and even concertos.

This violin is sold with the 2004 'FIDELIO' concert program in which it was used, along with some related newspaper cuttings.
