The important Dutch violin maker, J. J. Van de Geest (1899-1974) settled in Johannesburg in 1938 after working in London for George Hart & Son for 18 years as master craftsman and head of the workshop. In London be had acquired a reputation as an authority of exceptional knowledge and experience. In South Africa he established his own business in Johannesburg where he became a formidable force in the South African music world. The majority of fine instruments in South Africa were imported by him.
Apart from his personal work as maker he imported many instruments of various grades from different suppliers, mostly German and Dutch - these instruments were all labelled 'Made for J. J. Van de Geest'. This violin bears that label and is dated 1962, probably of Dutch origin.
This violin is really well-toned and responsive - certainly aimed at the advanced student world. It speaks with power, focus and projection and allows for the satisfying execution of just about any work, from chamber to concerto.
The two-piece back and ribs are of very attractive nicely figured maple with a distinct curl. The neck and scroll are of more plain wood. The varnish is an attractive amber and workmanship throughout is refined and accurate, conforming to the requirements of high-end lutherie.
This violin would satisfy a discerning and demanding musician.
