This violin is very well-toned and exceptionally appealing visually, with a very beautiful well-figured one-piece back. It is unlabelled, without any identifier and has to be considered as being of unknown authorship and origin. It appears to have been made around 1870.
The back and ribs are of well-flamed maple with a distinct medium curl - really attractive. The top is of excellent tone spruce with very even growth lines, medium at the flanks narrowing to the centre seam. The F's are elegant and two minor repairs to the edges are hardly noticeable. The neck and scroll are of mildly flamed maple and the volute is elegant, almost feminine. The purfling and cornerwork show a steady and consistent hand and the violin has attractive boxwood fittings.
This is a serious violin and it could serve as a career instrument.
