This extremely well-toned violin is arguably the finest ¾ instrument currently available in South Africa and certainly the best I have ever encountered. It is in impeccable condition and tonally matches most full-size instruments.
The label corresponds exactly to known labels of Mathias Neuner (1762-1830) and it can be assumed that the violin was made in Mittenwald. Furthermore, the deep red varnish corresponds to William Henley's comment that the varnish of this maker's instruments oxidised from the original reddish brown to a deep red over time, adding to the overall sense of authenticity associated with this violin.
The beautiful one-piece back and ribs are of good maple with a mild narrow curl. The top is of excellent tone spruce. The neck and scroll appear to be not of maple but probably of birch. The oil-based varnish is the original throughout, somewhat worn in the usual places, and its deep red being truly beautiful.
This violin will open wide the door of progress to any young violinist, but it should really be in the hands of a very talented young musician.
