The Klier family of violin makers was mostly based in Schönbach where they produced instruments from 1820 - 1920. They also largely exported trade instruments of various grades. This violin bears the handwritten label of Anton Klier and we can safely assume that it was made in that stable, around 1920.
Workmanship throughout is steady. The two-piece back, ribs, neck and scroll are of good, nicely figured maple with a distinct medium curl. The top is of good tone spruce. The scroll and Fs show a steady hand but remain somewhat perfunctory. The violin is antiqued to look older than it is.
This instrument is responsive and well-toned and would serve well as an advanced student upgrade. It is suitable for most of the repertoire.
