This cello is manifestly based on the Montagnana model, being slightly broader in its outline and very slightly shorter in its back length, in this case 74.2cm. It is unlabeled and probably of East European origin, made around 2010.
Throughout workmanship in this instrument is excellent. The tracing of the purfling and the mitres is flawless. Work on the scroll and Fs is very tidy and conform to the requirements of good lutherie. The choice of materials show serious intent; the two-piece back and the matching ribs, neck and scroll are of well-figured maple with a distinct and straight medium curl. The top is of excellent tone spruce with narrow growth lines in the centre, widening to the flanks. The spirit-based varnish is a reddish-brown amber, nicely complimenting the wood.
The pegs and fingerboard appear to be of solid ebony.
This cello has a new Belgian-style bridge as well as a new tailpiece with built-in adjusters. The endpin is of good quality. This instrument would benefit from better strings.
This cello is sold with a good quality semi-hard zipped case with wheels along with a good basic cello bow.
