This unlabeled violin is almost certainly of French origin, displaying much of the characteristics of good French lutherie. It was made around 1935 and has hardly been played on, leaving it in an impeccable state of preservation.
This instrument is very well-toned and responsive - it speaks easily with an open voice with lots of projection and focus. The choice of materials are appealing to the eye; the beautiful one-piece back is of well-flamed maple with a medium curl. The ribs, neck and scroll display a narrower flame, but distinct and appealing. The top is of excellent tone spruce with a straight and even medium grain. The light brown spirit-based varnish is of high transparency, nicely complimenting the material.
