This is a responsive instrument with big tone, easy to play on. This violin is manifestly a commercial reproduction of the work of Gaspar Da Salo. General workmanship in the volute, the Fs, purfling and particularly the varnish is characteristic of German trade work. The label is purely generic, dated 1545, but this violin has nothing to do with that maker's work.
The top is of very good quality tone spruce with a straight and even medium grain. The one piece back, ribs, neck and scroll are of mildly flamed maple. The scroll is highly perfunctory, lacking the additional curl associated with Da Salo's work. The spirit-based varnish is a golden brown with a touch of red in it. The double purfling (a characteristic of Da Salo) is well-traced and tidy, both the front and back. There are also two purfling figures in the back (see photos)
This violin would be suitable as an advanced upgrade and should open the door of progress for a talented student.

This violin is in excellent condition, free from cracks or evident repairs. The varnish in the front is worn in three areas, probably from rubbing against bow clips in the lid of a case, but this is hardly visible and poses no risk to the structural integrity of the violin. The lower bass corner in the front is broken and should eventually be reconstructed - as it is now, it's not really noticeable. A new bridge, tailpiece, chinrest and a fresh set of Dominant strings have been fitted.
