Although unlabelled and of unknown origin, this violin resembles in every aspect similar instruments imported by the important dealership of J J Van de Geest, from circa 1955 to 1974. Such instruments were usually labelled 'Made for JJ Van de Geest' and were sold through his business in Johannesburg. This violin is probably of German origin.
The two-piece back, ribs, neck and scroll are of a mildly figured maple with a straight medium curl. The top is of good tone spruce with narrow winter growth at the centre seam, widening to the flanks. Workmanship is refined with attention to detail, notably in the Fs and in the tracing of the purfling. The varnish is an attractive amber-brown and the age marks were artificially induced to antique the instrument.
This violin is well-toned with focus and projection.
