This is a very attractive violin, featuring well-traced double purfling and an unusually appealing birds-eye maple back and ribs. It is labelled Paolo Maggini, which is more generic than an actual copy of that maker's work. In reality Maggini's violins not only featured double purfling, but also an additional turn in the scroll as well as embellishments in the purfling on the back. This violin is probably of German origin since a large number of Maggini copies appeared from the German studios in the early twentieth century, which attested to their popularity.
The most striking aspect in this violin is its unusually good and strong, open tone. It is very responsive throughout the register, balanced and focused and is a real pleasure to play on.
The birds-eye figure in the two piece back is very well mirrored in the two halves. The ribs appear to be of the same piece of wood. The top is of unusually good tone spruce with a very even medium grain throughout. The violin is varnished in a beautiful golden brown oil varnish which complements the materials very well. The Fs are loosely styled on those typical of Maggini's work.
This violin would suit a musician who favours strong open tone and ease of execution. It makes violin playing a lot easier and a pleasure.
