This violin is characterised by excellent and very responsive tone and ease of performance. Being unlabelled, it is of unknown origin. However the body length, the open-grained tone spruce, the top arching and even the varnish suggest possible French roots, probably from a commercial studio in Mirecourt. It has been extensively antiqued artificially, but dates from around 1920 or maybe a bit later.
The one-piece back is of mildly flamed maple, repeated in the ribs, neck and scroll. The top is of open-grained tone spruce, often favoured in French violinmaking. The varnish is an attractive dark golden brown. The Fs follow the Guarneri model.
This violin would be eminently suitable for a talented advanced student upgrade, and may even serve for professional purposes.
