The French firm of Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy, better known as (JTL), not only dominated the landscape of French commercial violinmaking, but set a very high standard internationally in this sector from 1861 to 1968. They always employed the finest craftsmen available. They produced instruments in a variety of levels, from entry level to professional. JTL's were always good and to this day serve countless musicians with well made and good sounding instruments.
This violin, probably dating from the mid-1950s, reflect the high level of workmanship that is the norm in this company. This is noticeable particularly to attention to detail in the edgework, corners and purfling and Fs. The top is of excellent tone spruce with straight growth lines, ranging from medium to open grain. The two-piece back, ribs, neck and scroll are of mildly flamed maple with a medium curl. Varnish is an attractive golden brown of high transparency, complimenting the wood well. This violin is very well-toned with projection, easy response and good balance throughout the register. It is a very satisfying instrument to play on.
