The firm of Haynes & Co operated in London between 1866 and approximately 1914. It was founded by William Haynes. Although producing instruments in their own workshop, this company largely imported French instruments from Mirecourt and distributed them under the Haynes label.
This violin clearly shows workmanship and modelling associated with French lutherie and can be assumed to have been made in Mirecourt for Haynes & Co. One is struck by the unusually tidy work with excellent attention to detail. The Fs are particularly elegant and crisp as is the scroll with its beautifully finished fluting. The purfling and mitres are superb throughout. The choice of materials is excellent - the tonespruce top is narrow grained on the centre line, and widens to the flanks. The two-piece back, ribs, neck and scroll are of attractive well-figured maple with a medium curl and distinct flame. The golden reddish brown oil-based varnish compliments the material well, adding to the visual appeal of this instrument.
This violin is well toned and satisfying to play. It responds easily and it is a good instrument by all standards.
