Modelling and workmanship in this violin identify it as French, from around 1860. It is a copy of Antonio Stradivari and is fitted with a generic Strad label.
This very attractive instrument is in excellent condition and unusually well-toned - the sound is robust, with projection. The G-string is full and satisfying and the balance is even throughout the register.
An unusual feature of this violin is that, apart from the one-piece back, it features a one-piece top and the lower rib is in one piece from bout to bout. These characteristics may assist in identifying its authorship. The oil varnish is an attractive reddish brown over a yellow ground. The varnish is certainly the original and is well-worn, showing considerable craquelure, which is not without appeal. The one-piece top is of open-grain tone spruce. The one-piece back, ribs, neck and scroll are of mildly-flamed maple. The scroll is elegant and well-balanced. Cornerwork, notably in the mitres, show attention to detail.
This violin is suitable for demanding performance. It's not only a pleasure to listen to, but also a pleasure to play. It responds easily and requires little effort.
