The Mittenwald-based firm of Neuner & Hornsteiner operated during the 19th century and reached its zenith during the latter part of that century. They produced instruments in various models, from basic to high professional level and were known for superb workmanship and very high quality throughout their operation. They exported to many countries and to this day any instrument labelled Neuner & Hornsteiner commands respect. This violin, dated 1881 remains in superb condition and apart from superficial scratches, it is completely free from defects and is largely as when made, over 140 years ago.

The two-piece back, ribs, neck and scroll are of mildly-flamed maple. The top is of narrow-grained tone spruce. The Fs are elegant. The oil-based varnish is a dark red-brown and somewhat opaque. This violin is responsive and well-toned, speaking easily through the full register. It would be eminently suitable for an advanced upgrade or entry-level professional performance.
