This violin's label indicates that it was made by the Glaesel studio for J. J. Van de Geest. The important violin maker and dealer, J. J. Van de Geest, who had a business in Johannesburg from 1938 till 1974, sourced instruments from a wide range of reputable studios. It's extremely unlikely however that this violin is the personal work of Edmund Glaesel.
The selection of materials is truly attractive and of refined quality. The two-piece back, ribs, neck and scroll appear to be from the same piece of maple with a distinct figure and narrow curl - very appealing. The top is of superb tone spruce with an even and medium grain. The varnish is an attractive reddish brown on the yellow ground and of high transparency, complimenting the beauty of the wood. Workmanship throughout is refined with attention to detail and reflecting adherence to the finer points of good lutherie.
This violin has a robust and responsive tone throughout its register. It's a responsive instrument, easy to play and pleasant to listen to. It is suitable for very advanced performance and is equal to most demands made on it.
