This violin is very well-toned, with power, focus and projection. It would be suitable for professional work.
The dealership of Hawkes & Son was established in London in 1855 and became universally respected. They sourced most of their instruments from studios and makers in Mirecourt. At the end of the 19th century they founded an adjoining workshop for construction and repairs where they mostly employed French craftsmen.
Whether this instrument was made in France or in London is not known, but it is manifestly of French workmanship in all aspects. It bears the Hawkes & Son business label, dated 1896.
The two-piece back, ribs, neck and scroll are of very attractive maple with a distinct figure and even, medium curl. The table is of excellent tone spruce with narrow to medium grain. The varnish is an attractive light golden brown. Workmanship throughout is of very high quality and the violin conforms to high standards in lutherie.
