This is my (Johan Grobbelaar's) personal instrument. I have often been asked what I play on and have decided to show it here. I have access to truly good instruments, but this one outplays everything else and I adopted it for myself. It is not for sale and I'm showing it here just for reference.

This is essentially a concert violin with the powerful clear tone and projection you would want if you were to play the Sibelius or Tschaikovsky concertos. It has also been on loan to Mr Samson Diamond, leader of the Odeion String Quartet, for his recordings with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban, of the two Beethoven Romances.

This violin is unlabelled and strictly of unknown origin. I acquired it from a Philadelphia family who brought it here from the US.

It is a violin of exceptional beauty and refined craftsmanship, notably in the corners, Fs and scroll. The accompanying photos speak for themselves. The materials are superbly chosen and of true beauty.

I would also like to add this: It has been nefariously suggested by some struggling wannabe violin dealers in South Africa that I actually don't play the violin and that I know nothing. This is not true. I started playing at the age of 8 and was a student of Prof Walter Mony. I majored in violin for my B. Mus (Hons) degree. In 1970 I was Associate Concert Master of the National Youth Orchestra (sat next to Jurgen Schwietering who was CM), and the following year I was CM of the same orchestra. In 1972 I was the only South African viola player to represent SA in the International Youth Orchestra in Lausanne. Although I opted for a career as Television Producer for the SABC in Music Programmes and never pursued a career as violinist, I assure all my clients and broader music community in South Africa that I actually do play the violin. Quite well.
