This violin by Nicolas Didier, aîné (1757- 1833) was sold by W. E. Hill & Sons in 1935 and a certificate of authenticity was established at that time which is still available with the instrument. The violin is highly characteristic of the work of this important French maker and bears the maker's firebrand in the back at the usual place, faintly discernable.

This instrument requires restoration and is offered 'as is'. It has been compromised by the work of an amateur attempting to repair some serious scratches on the top (see photos). This could be restored by a master craftsman.

Despite the above this is a very worthy violin on every level, certainly meriting all effort made to restore it to its original condition. Its eventual sale should preferably be to a professional and experienced restorer.

Dimensions :
  Length of back: 35.6 cm

Condition :
Structurally this violin is in superb condition except for two things: Firstly, it sustained some serious lengthwise gouges, or scratches to the treble side of the top, running from the inner edge of the treble F downwards. This may be the result of an ill-considered repair, very poorly executed. This can be restored by a master craftsman (see photos).
Secondly, an attempt to clean the violin (probably by an amateur) resulted in the varnish being slightly compromised. This is not too serious and could be polished out by an expert.
Other than that, this violin would benefit from a new set of pegs and possibly the restoration of one of the corners.
