There can be no doubting this violin's French origin. Although fitted with a generic Stradivari label, a calculated guess could attribute it to the commercial studio of Justin Derazey or his successors, circa 1890 or later.
This violin is made of well-chosen materials - the maple back is well-figured with a distinct flame and narrow curl. Purfling and cornerwork are very steady with good attention to the mitres. The Fs in particular are elegant and refined with slight fluting of the lower wings. The varnish is an attractive golden amber, beautifully complimenting the materials.
No doubt the somewhat flat arching contributes greatly to this violin's powerful tone and projection. It speaks with ease and is a pleasure to play on, giving big reward for a minimal effort. This instrument would be a worthwhile acquisition for any young musician seeking to develop as a soloist.
