The firm of Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy (JTL) produced a line of instruments called 'Virtuose' which was largely its flagship in very high quality. These instruments were characterised by a superb selection of material - always attractive to the eye and with impeccable workmanship throughout. Needless to say the tonal properties are equal to the intentions that drove the 'Virtuose' series.
This violin bears the small JTL label and 'Virtuose' identifier, along with a label stating that it is a copy of Antonio Stradivarius. A further label indicates that it was sold from the JTL branch in London. It is undated and a calculated guess would date it to circa 1925, maybe a bit later.
The attractive two-piece back is of nicely flamed maple with a distinct medium curl. The same figure is repeated in the ribs, neck and scroll. The varnish is an attractive golden light brown. Workmanship is superb, noted particularly in the tracing of the purfling, the superb mitres, a nicely balanced scroll and beautifully crafted Fs, fluted in the lower wings.
This instrument is well-toned with balance and projection. It speaks with ease and satisfies very much.
