The identifiers in this violin clearly establish it as being from the workshop of Thomas Perry and William Wilkinson, made in Dublin in 1807 and with the serial number 3316. Apart from the label, the violin also bears Perry's stamp on the back just below the neck button. Thomas Perry (1744 - 1818) was greatly respected as violin maker and is frequently referred to as the 'Irish Stradivarius'.

The two-piece back, ribs, sides, neck and scroll are of plain maple, all probably from the same piece of wood. The top is of good medium-grained tone spruce. The purfling is painted on. The overall shape and notably the Fs are characteristic of Perry's known work.

This violin is well-toned, much in line with the high tonal properties associated with Thomas Perry's work. It has the maturity found only in old instruments, combined with good balance and focus. It is a pleasant instrument to play and speaks with ease.

Dimensions :
  Length of back: 35.4 cm

Condition :
This violin has been the subject of considerable restoration. All repairs to cracks and to the centre seam in the back have been meticulously carried out and cleated. It appears that there has been an earlier repair done on the neck button and neck root area.
This violin is structurally secure and should serve reliably for many more generations. It has been over-varnished with a coat of clear oil varnish. It has new pegs and a new bridge and soundpost.
