The identifiers in this violin clearly establish it as being from the workshop of Thomas Perry and William Wilkinson, made in Dublin in 1807 and with the serial number 3316. Apart from the label, the violin also bears Perry's stamp on the back just below the neck button. Thomas Perry (1744 - 1818) was greatly respected as violin maker and is frequently referred to as the 'Irish Stradivarius'.
The two-piece back, ribs, sides, neck and scroll are of plain maple, all probably from the same piece of wood. The top is of good medium-grained tone spruce. The purfling is painted on. The overall shape and notably the Fs are characteristic of Perry's known work.
This violin is well-toned, much in line with the high tonal properties associated with Thomas Perry's work. It has the maturity found only in old instruments, combined with good balance and focus. It is a pleasant instrument to play and speaks with ease.
