Arthur Henry Copley (1903-1976) worked for W. E. Hill & Sons for thirty years, starting there as a young man in 1917. He was responsible for some of the finest bows made for that firm.
This bow, stamped 'HILL', has a round Pernambuco stick. The plain ebony frog is silver-mounted and the adjuster button of solid silver. The letter F stamped into the frog's underslide and also into the stick by the adjuster mortise confirms that the frog is original to this bow. The lapping is of silver wire - probably the original - and the recent thumbpad of black ostrich shin leather. It can be said confidently that, except for the thumbpad, all parts are original to the bow.
This bow is heavier than the norm and has truly superb playing properties. It is very stable throughout its length, has excellent articulation and greatly facilitates spiccato. The stick is perfectly straight and the camber very good. A calculated guess is that it was made around 1935, but it would be difficult to date it accurately.
It was used for many years by a foremost Russian violinist who for 18 years was Concert Master of the Odessa Opera in Russia, and also a respected soloist there before emigrating to Israel. This bow was paired with another Hill, by Edgar Bishop, elsewhere on this page.
This is a very good bow by all standards.
