Christian Hans-Karl Schmidt was the stepson of the eminent German bow maker, Kurt Dölling and was born in Erlbach in 1940. He initially studied under Dölling but later expanded his apprenticeship under B. Ouchard and later with Siegfried Finkel in Switzerland. Schmidt is extremely highly regarded in bow making circles in Germany and internationally with his bows making their way to the best players in the world.
This bow has a round stick cut from deep red pernambuco of superb quality. It bears the makers stamp in the usual place. The frog is fully mounted in gold with a Parisian eye and the golden three ring adjuster button has a central ring of mammoth ivory. The tip facing appears to be of mammoth ivory and the lapping of black and white imitation whalebone. The thumb-pad is of black leather. The stick is perfectly straight and the camber is superb.
In mounting this bow in gold the maker is stating that this is as good a bow as he can make - it can be said that this bow's playing properties are consistent with what one would expect from a gold-mounted Schmidt.
If you like a bow that is just slightly heavier than standard, this bow at 64.1g would please you very much.
