Although Luigi Marucchi was born in Johannesburg in 1959, he is of Italian descent and has Italian citizenship.
Early in life his love for and interest in wood led to him to making handmade furniture to order. This led eventually to him studying and qualifying as violin maker, and after that moving on to guitar making. Today he lives in George, South Africa, where he is established as one of this country's foremost guitar makers and where he offers courses in guitar making. He is also an expert restorer of violins.
This violin was commissioned from Mr Marucchi by Prof. Dereck Ochse in 2004 at the time when Prof. Ochse had just retired, sold his J. B. Vuillaume he used throughout his life and was looking to replace it. It is a copy of the work of Nicolas Amati and it shows a steady hand and fine workmanship with attention to detail.
The one-piece back, ribs, neck and scroll are of mildly flamed maple with a narrow curl. The top is of excellent tone spruce with an even medium to narrow grain. The Fs show refinement and balance. The oil varnish is an attractive reddish brown.
This violin is well-toned, responsive and speaks with ease, making it satisfying to play.
It may of interest and further testimony to the unfailing success with which Mr Marucchi pursues his diverse interests, that he also created and owns the highly successful Six Dogs Gin brand.
