This violin is based on the Guarneri model. Every aspect of this instrument reflects an exceptionally high degree of accuracy in execution and an extremely steady and confident hand. The crisp work in the purfling, the corners and particularly in the mitres impresses and attests to why Rafaello di Biagio is considered internationally as an important Cremonese violinmaker.
Raffaello di Biagio was born in 1972 and began studying violinmaking under Stefano Conia. He completed his apprenticeship at the International School of Violinmaking 'A. Stradivari' in Cremona. Today he is a member of the Italian Professional Violinmakers Association.
Overall this violin is characteristic of this maker's work, which generally has a bold and solid appearance in outline. Likewise, the scroll, albeit accurately and balanced in execution and extremely nicely cut, has a strong and masculin feel to it. The materials are appealing - a fine maple of medium curl and distinct figure is used for the two-piece back and is combined with good tone spruce in the top. In the back the curl slopes downward from the flanks to the center line. The sides, neck and scroll are less flamed. The oil varnish is a superb amber-brown colour and very translucent, complimenting the materials well.
This violin bears the maker's known label, dated and signed by hand and is also sold with the maker's certificate.
This instrument is well-toned and a pleasure to play on.
