The broad and distinct curl in the maple back of this cello, repeated also in the ribs, imbue this cello with an air of boldness. Yet, the lovely red-brown varnish - characteristic of so many French instruments - combined with the elegant lines of the Stradivari pattern, add a touch of elegance and undeniable charm, enhanced by a light antiquing in the varnish. All this makes of this cello a very appealing instrument visually.
If the above serves as precursor to the tonal properties, then playing this cello doesn't disappoint. It is undoubtedly one of the best instruments currently in this dealership, speaking with exceptional ease and responsiveness to the slightest input and nuance. The tone is big and suitable for solo work, very pleasant on the ear. It requires very little effort to produce a big sound - ideal for students working on dexterity and technical growth in which an unresponsive instrument is like trying to run while dragging around a tree trunk - a sad reality for many of our young musicians. The ease of response in this instrument frees the player to focus on accuracy, knowing that the instrument will do what is required - a rare quality.
It's a new instrument, newly set up with a Belgian bridge and currently fitted with high-end professional strings (in this case a set of Obligatos by Pirastro).
