When first played on after being set up, this cello fully lived up to expectation with a big, robust and focussed tone, well-balanced and with clear projection throughout the full register. This a good instrument that measures up to professional requirements and is well-suited for solo performance.
As much as it sounds good, it is visually appealing with a warm golden amber oil-based varnish that has been considerably antiqued to resemble an older 19th century instrument, but it is in fact new, having been made in 2014. With its good tone already well-established early on, one can only anticipate the extent to which the tone will grow and develop with use over the first few weeks and after that.
The cello is made of well-chosen materials - the attractive two piece back and ribs are of nicely flamed maple with an even straight curl. The neck and scroll are of less flamed wood. The top is of excellent tone spruce with a somewhat narrow grain. The Fs are crisp and nicely positioned and the purfling and mitres are truly superb, showing accuracy and attention to detail.
At this time the cello is fitted with a carbon fibre endpin and high-end professional quality strings.
