This violin is superbly toned with an exceptionally powerful and focussed tone, rich and even, making it principally a solo instrument. It nevertheless allows for fine tone variants and gradation of colours. It plays very easily and gives as much as you ask of it.
It bears the maker's signed label and branded monogram inside the back. It is also sold with a certificate by the maker. However, no amount of research produced any information additional to what is contained in the document - all of which is given on this page.
What initially appears to be somewhat of a nondescript Hungarian violin in fact, under close examination, reveals superb violin making skills - from a superb choice of materials to very refined workmanship throughout. The two-piece back is of excellent maple with a nicely figured very straight narrow curl. The ribs, neck and scroll are of similar figure, but the ribs are more mildly flamed. The top is of good tone spruce with surprisingly open grain throughout. The pegbox and scroll are good and somewhat idiosyncratic in the shape of the pegbox flanks. The Fs are bold. The purfling throughout is excellent and cornerwork superbly tidy. The varnish is a reddish golden honey colour, described by the maker as 'half-oil', though it rather has the appearance and wear characteristics of spirit-based varnish.
This violin is in excellent condition. This is a good instrument by all standards, especially if you are looking for a solo instrument that will allow you to be heard when that is what is needed.
