A good violin by
Mitio Dimitrov
(b. 1974)

Kazanlak, 2007

Every aspect of this violin, from its materials to the workmanship, is of a very high order, establishing Mitio Dimitrov as one of Bulgaria's foremost violin makers.

Dimitrov (b. 1974) studied violin making at the Kremona instrument studio, whereafter he improved his skills by working with numerous masters in this field. He has been designing and building his own instruments since 1998, focusing mainly on violins and violas. He works only with Balkan tone woods, having excellent sound properties. He prefers working with naturally dried maple and tone spruce and selects only the highest quality. His varnish is his own alcohol-based recipe and self-made. His work is modelled mainly on the work of the great Italian masters like Stradivari, Guarneri and Ornate, among others.

Today Dimitrov is a member of the Regional Association of the Master Luthiers and a member of the Bulgarian Chamber of the Artisans. He has participated regularly in international exhibitions and competitions in Bulgaria, Italy and Belgium and his instruments are in the hands of professional musicians in Italy, Belgium, Austria, the United States, Canada, Venezuela, Malaysia and Japan.

This violin was make in Kazanlak in 2007 and is in superb condition. Its most striking feature is its beautiful two-piece back of nicely flamed Balkan maple with a straight narrow curl, repeated in the ribs, neck and scroll. The tracing of the purfling is clean and really impressive, with impeccable corner work - the bee-stings are neat and demonstrate an experienced and steady hand. The table is of fine tone spruce with a straight medium grain.

This violin has been in professional use since it was made. It is very well-toned and suitable for demanding professional performance.
