In the past number of years several of Valtchev's violas have become available in South Africa. They all manifest a consistency in standard and craftmanship which never fails to impress. These are really good instruments - well made, with visual appeal and, without exception, superb tone.

Vassil Valtchev is internationally accepted as one of the most important violin makers in Bulgaria and is certainly one of the leading viola maker in Europe. He seems to have a particular understanding of the tonal properties of violas and his output of these instruments is prolific. This particular instrument was made in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1992.

This viola is is really attractive with its rich red-brown varnish over a yellow ground. One is struck by the handsome one-piece back and the unusually elegant and well-positioned f-holes. Otherwise the instrument is characterized by excellent workmanship - crisp and steady.

As with all the other instruments by this maker that I had the pleasure to deal with, this one is noted for a robust tone. It speaks easily and is clear and even throughout the register.

It is sold with a certificate by the maker.
