Svend Christensen studied bow making and restoration in Fertans in France and now has a large studio in downtown Johannesburg where he makes bows. He also restores string instruments and refurbishes and rebuilds pianos. Recently he has acquired the machinery to produce top-end cases for violins, violas and cellos.
Svend has in recent times produced several impressive violin bows made of snakewood and regularly receives commissions from professional musicians for bows.
This baroque cello bow is likewise made of snakewood - a very attractive speckled hardwood that has in past times been successfully used for bows in the absence of pernambuco.
The bow conforms to the norms and requirements for baroque bows and the musicians who have tried it all expressed appreciation for its playing qualities. Svend incorporated some of his own design ideas into making it. The bow has no lapping or thumbpad and instead uses a type of fluting cut into each of the octagonal facets where the bow is gripped, making for a secure grip. Svend furthermore incorporated improvements suggested by professional cellists resulting in a bow that would satisfy the most demanding standards.
