Vassil Valtchev is internationally accepted as one of the most important violin makers in Bulgaria and is certainly its leading viola maker. He seems to have a particular understanding of the tonal properties of violas and his output of these instruments is prolific - all of them well-crafted and sounding good. This particular instrument was made in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1993.
This viola is characterized by a fine selection of very attractive woods and excellent workmanship. Valtchev at times makes his own tailpieces and chinrests, as is in this case - they beautifully compliment the deep red-brown of the viola.
I have dealt with several of Valtchev's instruments and can speak for a consistence in quality and tonal property. As with all his other instruments, this one is noted for a robust tone. It speaks easily and is clear and even throughout the register.
