This is a striking violin which immediately demands interest. The materials are attractive and where workmanship may have demonstrated more finesse and attention to detail, any shortcomings are adequately made up for by excellent tonal properties. This is an appealing violin and not without intrigue.
In spite of the Joannes Gagliano label, it remains of unknown origin. Photos were sent to experts in New York and London, but no-one seriously believed this to be Gagliano's work. A leading authority on Italian violins didn't think this violin is Italian. Estimates on its age vary from mid to late-19th century, and one authority felt this could be from the early 20th century, which is quite possible.
The most striking feature of this violin is its lovely one-piece back of beautifully flamed maple with a straight medium curl. The sides are likewise of attractive wood. The top appears to be free from cracks and repairs. The instrument is varnished in a beautiful golden honey colour. The only detractors are the pedantic and rough work on the purfling, particularly in the corners, and a scroll that lacks the skill and ability one would expect from a master craftsman, such as Joannes Gagliano was.
