This cello is characterized by an open and responsive tone, focussed, balanced and easy to play, which lives up to the expectations one would have of a good instrument suitable for a wide range of performance requirements.

As much as it sounds good, it is also visually appealing with a warm golden amber oil-based varnish that has been antiqued somewhat to make the cello resemble an older 19th century instrument. With its good tone already well-established, one can only anticipate the extent to which the sonority will develop with use over the first few weeks and after that.

This cello is made of well-chosen materials - the two-piece back and ribs are of mildly flamed maple of a medium curl. The neck and scroll are of less flamed wood. The top is of excellent tone spruce with medium to narrow growth lines. The Fs are crisp and nicely finished and the purfling and mitres are truly superb, showing accuracy and attention to detail in the corners.

The current strings are Pirastro Obligatos, fitted since the photos were taken.
