Considering that Weichold died in 1902, one can assume that this bow was made toward the end of the 19th century and would now be well over 100 years old. Yet, it can confidently be stated to be in exceptionally good condition, original in all its part and hardly used at all. It has the superb playing properties that Weichold's work is known for and along with its usually good condition it should appeal to both violinist and collector.

Richard Weichold was born in Dresden in 1823 and studied bowmaking under H. R. Pfretzschner in Markneukirchen - then the leading bowmaker in Germany. He moved to Hamburg, but later returned to Dresden where he remained until his death in 1902. Weichold is considered as one of the foremost German bowmakers of the late 19th century and was the preferred supplier of bows to the foremost virtuosi of his day - Henley refers to some 'magnificent' bows that contributed to the comfort and skill of leading soloists of the 19th century.

Weichold had great respect for the work of Tourte and many of his bows were direct copies of Tourte's work - around 20% to 30% of his output were Tourte copies and were stamped as such. In these bows he stamped 'Tourte' in the usual place on the player's side, but his own stamp went on the off side, still identifying it as his personal work. This is one such bow, bearing this double stamping.

This bow is perfectly straight and the camber is excellent. It has truly excellent playing properties that any serious violinist would appreciate.
