With this cello one is immediately aware of the really fine choice of materials, clearly selected for visual appeal as much as for tonal property. Refined workmanship throughout and high transparency in the varnish contribute greatly to a very attractive and appealing instrument where visual beauty is eclipsed only by its superb tonal properties, which can be described strong, robust and open, well-balanced and with strong projection. It speaks with ease and responds comfortably to any demand made on it.

It is fitted with the studio label of J. J. van de Geest, dated 1955 (see photo). Apart from his own personal output as violinmaker, J. J. van de Geest had a very successful business in Johannesburg to which he imported many fine instruments, from both high-end fine Cremonese and French items to more commercial instruments aimed at the student and amateur market. The latter he sourced from mainly Germany, Holland and at times from Japan. Such instruments were usually of good quality and he always labelled them as "Made for J J van de Geest" (as in this case), followed by additional information, such as a serial number, date, address, etc. These instruments were NOT made by J. J. van de Geest, but were the work of other studios.

Strictly speaking this cello is of unknown authorship as it would be difficult to ascertain its true origin, but this is certainly one of the finest such instruments imported by J. J. van de Geest that I have seen and one can only surmise on where he sourced it from.

It is in impeccable condition. The ribs and two-piece back are of unusually finely curled sycamore with a distinct straight narrow flame - really attractive. The top is of medium grained to open tone spruce. The neck and scroll however are of more plain wood. The workmanship satisfies throughout.

This cello is suitable for solo work of a demanding nature, with plenty of power.
