This violin combines a whole range of very desirable properties - firstly, it is exceptionally well-toned with a robust, open, bright and responsive sound with strong projection, which make it very easy and pleasing to play on. Further, it is unusually attractive, made of excellent materials which not only facilitate tone production, but which are very pleasing to look at. And thirdly, it is in impeccable condition with no repairs or cracks anywhere.

It is fitted with a fake generic label of important attribution, which certainly has no merit for determining its origins. A calculated guess would place its time of making between the late 19th and early 20th century. One could say with some certainty that it is of French origin, very likely Derazey school or even Lupot school. The open and even grain in the top would be consistent with the predilection of several French makers. The arching is distinctly French, or even Italian - certainly not German. Furthermore, the length of back of exactly 36 cm conforms to a tendency that prevailed in French workshops through the late 19th century and after.

The two-piece back, sides, neck and scroll are all of matching maple of considerable beauty with a distinct medium curl. Workmanship is of a higher order, conforming to refined points of good lutherie - fully fluted scroll and nice, crisp Fs with beautifully fluted palettes. Much of the apparent age of the violin is the consequence of deliberate antiquing, but nicely done in good taste.

I liked this violin from the moment I saw it and am happy that it is now one of my more 'special' instruments in my personal collection.

This violin is suitable for any use and would be a viable investment.
