This violin is exceptionally well-toned and suitable for almost any demand one could wish to make on it. The g-string is really responsive with a rich focussed sonority that pleases in high g-string passages requiring a big sound. The high register is equally pleasing with projection, clarity and focus. It's tone alone makes it a desirable instrument.

It is in impeccable condition, after some 110 years. It has an attractive one-piece back of good maple - characteristic of the top range of the firm of Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy (JTL)'s output. It bears a generic label: "J.T.L. Geronimo Barnabetti Paris". (The date 1907 and Durban has been added by hand, likely through the sound hole - undoubtedly by an early owner and not by the maker.) JTL instruments bearing this label were of the firm's top range and were always noted for their good tone and visual appeal - really nice workmanship and a good choice of materials. This is an exceptionally good instrument from JTL.

For many years JTL set the French standard for high-quality trade instruments. Many important French violinmakers at some point either worked for this company, or served on its directorship. Its instruments are greatly respected, not only for the excellent materials used in their production, but also for the fine workmanship displayed in the majority of their output.

Apart from the beautiful one-piece back, the sides are also nicely figured, but with a broader curl. The top of good tone spruce. This is in keeping with the use of good materials that is a hallmark of JTL. Lastly, this violin has an exquisite dark wine-red varnish that only the French really ever get right and which is characteristic of many JTL instruments.

It has JTL branded inside to the top block.
